Utah – Filmmaking Deep Dive: Collaborative Documentary Storytelling and THE TERRITORY [FREE]

How can documentary filmmakers develop strategies to combat extractive modes of storytelling, and instead make their work in collaboration with the communities they are filming? Join us for a case study of The Territory, winner of both the 2022 Sundance Film Festival World Cinema Documentary Competition Audience Award and the Special Jury Award for Documentary Craft. Director Alex Pritz and editor Carlos Rojas Felice will discuss how and why their team adopted a conscious, collaborative approach to filmmaking—directly involving the film’s subjects, the Uru-eu-wau-wau tribe in Brazil, in producing and filming their own story—and how this collective storytelling impacted the overall shape and content of the documentary for the better. Experienced and aspiring nonfiction directors, producers, editors, cinematographers, and composers will benefit from this thought-provoking discussion that challenges conventional approaches to storytelling. RSVP via the link above is required; however, please note that an RSVP does not guarantee admittance, as seating is first-come, first served.
