September 16th – 17th – at the Gallivan Center
The Urban Arts Festival is a free community event organized by the Utah Arts Alliance. Started in 2011, the Urban Arts Festival has become one of the most unique and exciting events of the year in Salt Lake City. This year the festival is moving to the Gallivan Center, allowing the event to welcome a growing number of artists and attendees. The festival, scheduled for September 16th and 17th, is a two-day celebration of urban and artistic culture for the community, art lovers, and families. The festival features art, music, dance, live street art demonstrations, automotive arts, digital arts and much more!
The Urban Arts Festival is made possible by hardworking, dedicated volunteers. As the festival grows, so does the need for enthusiastic volunteers who are passionate about the arts and their community. As a reward for donating your time and talents, volunteers will receive:
- an Urban Arts Festival T-Shirt!
- experience that will look great on a resume!
- networking opportunities with some of Utah’s greatest artists and entertainers!
- and the chance to have fun and give back to your community at the same time!

2017 Urban Arts Festival Volunteer Roles:
Artist Check-In: Artist Check-In volunteers will assist artists as they arrive to set up for the festival. You will either be stationed at an artist check-in table, or in a particular zone to help artists find their assigned spaces and get their tables and booths ready.
Automotive Arts, Bar, Digital Arts, Information Booth/Greeter, Kids Art Area, Live Art Walls, Stage, and General Setup: Sign up for a setup shift to get a unique behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to make a festival happen! (must be able to lift 25+ lbs, and walk up to 5 miles)
Artist Marketplace Assistant: Artist Marketplace volunteers will alternate between booth sitting/artist hospitality, and some light festival site cleanup. This is a great chance to interact with some amazing artists and make sure that they have an outstanding festival experience!
Setup, Booze Crew, Information Booth/Greeter, and Artist Marketplace Shift Leads: If you want to get more involved with the festival, sign up to be a Shift Lead! Your shift will be a little longer so that you can help with shift changes and directing other volunteers. You’ll also need to attend a pre-festival orientation session. (Booze Crew Shift Leads must also have their Sips and Tips Certification).
Automotive Arts: New in 2017! The Automotive Arts section showcases the best of Utah’s custom culture with cars and motorcycles featuring original artwork! Volunteers will help keep the vehicles safe and answer basic questions from festival attendees.
Booze Crew: Booze Crew volunteers keep everyone happy and hydrated with a selection of beer, wine, and cocktails (plus an assortment of soda and water for non-drinkers). Please note in the comments if you have your Sips & Tips, as some jobs require that certification.
Digital Arts: New in 2017! The Digital Arts section features cutting edge projection art and virtual reality art technology. Digital Arts volunteers will get to learn about and help attendees use this technology.
Entertainment Assistant: Entertainment Assistants will have the rare opportunity to meet the festival’s musicians and performers, assist with load on/off, and keep everything on-schedule. You may also be asked to assist with entertainment artist hospitality in the green room.
Information Booth/Greeter: Sign up to greet attendees and staff our information booth! You’ll get to meet lots of people, and put a fun, helpful face on the festival.
Kids Art Area: The Urban Arts Festival is teaming up with local organizations to offer fun art projects for kids! Kids Art Area volunteers should be prepared to have fun assisting kids with these projects.
Live Art Walls: The festival features live painting demonstrations from Utah’s top mural artists, and a community wall for everyone to paint on. Live Art volunteers should be outgoing and interested in art as they will supervise people painting on the community wall.
Saturday Setup: The Saturday Setup crew is responsible for making sure that the Gallivan Center is ready to host thousands of festival attendees. Duties include hanging signs, setting up tables and chairs, and more. (must be able to lift 25lbs and walk up to 5 miles)
Saturday Close-up: Sign up for Saturday Closeup to help us get the festival ready for Sunday! Come a little early to see our headliner, Grandmaster Flash! (must be able to lift 25lbs or more and walk up to 5 miles)
Artist Load-Out: Artist Load-Out volunteers will help direct artists as they tear down their booths & load them into their vehicles. You’ll help direct the flow of traffic on the festival grounds, and keep an eye on booths while artists retrieve their vehicles.
General Teardown: Once the festival is over we’ll need lots of help to tear it all down! Teardown volunteers will help take down and move booths, signs, banners, and other festival elements.
